Greetings, It's been too long since my last update, but I'm pleased to at last find a moment to revisit some of the highlights of 2005-2006 and share some of what 2007 promises to hold. In Review: 2005-2006
Fall 2005, I premiered two pieces at the Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church "Telling Tales," a dance diary in three parts, and "Apollo and the Muses," a fresh interpretation of Stravinsky's classic work. The performance received terrific critical and audience response. Dance Insider's Chris Dohse writes, " It has the elegant, timeless quality of a snow globe," and Erika Kinetz, in her New York Times review writes, "it achieves a trick of intimacy sometimes created by literature: you can almost feel Mr. Daniels's consciousness pressing up against yours ." And please do check out the Deborah Jowitt's full write-up—any review that uses the words "magnificent" (twice), "finely choreographed," "vividly changeable," "rich in invention," "magnificently danced," and "thoughtful and sensitive," is one I'll definitely keep! Also find Hilary Ostlere's review and a Dance Magaine article that appeared in December 2005. I've been busy for the past months transferring all my work to DVD and am pleased and honored to announce that my work is now catalogued in the Jerome Robbins Dance Collection of the New York Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. After recording Nurit Tilles performing the scores from "Telling Tales" and "Apollo," I was invited to assist in recording her and Don Hulbert performing works for piano and flute. Also, upon the request of another friend and Apollo alum, Dušan Týnek, I was pleased to direct rehearsals of his new "Košile," which was warmly received at its July premier at Dance Theater Workshop. Looking Ahead:
More recently, on March 22, I was asked to perform and speak about my work at Realities of AIDS, a festival of AIDS and the Arts at Nassau Community College in Garden City, New York. My presentation, "Responding to AIDS through Dance," included two solo performances, "Ghazi" and "Novelette," and a video screening of another entitled "Uncharted." It is extremely important to me to have this kind of work be a part of what I do and it was serendipitous to have had it fall into my lap at the last moment. On my agenda is a new collaborative project with writer Perry Brass and composer Paula M. Kimper. Perry's poem, "The Restless Yearning for My Self," is the impetus of the work for which Paula is writing a composition for string quartet and countertenor. I've been commissioned to both create and perform the dance. At this time, as Paula works on the score, we are looking for rehearsal space, potential performance venues, and financial support to make it happen. I have also begun work on several other new dance pieces—one, a duet titled, "Abecedary," will be set to a commissioned score by Gerald Busby for piano and marimba. I will post details on this and other pieces as they develop. In the remainder of 2007, I most look forward to sharing my efforts and performance with all my kind friends and supporters. Best wishes, Richard |
